Spotlight on Garland

The City of Garland’s Public & Media Relations Department was recently recognized by the City Council for the Lone Star Regional Emmy® earned by its video “A Look Back at The Wall That Heals.”

The Wall That Heals is a three-quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, along with a mobile Education Center, that travels throughout the country. The exhibit was on display at Audubon Park from Feb. 27 through March 1, 2020, and attracted more than 13,000 visitors from across the state and beyond who paid their respects.

Starting with The Wall That Heals arrival, setup, opening and official ceremony, and ending with its disassembly and departure, the City’s video comprehensively covered the event throughout the visit.

Garland’s Community Development Department was recognized by the National Community Development Association (NCDA) for its efforts to partner with community organizations and federal housing funds to provide a home to an Army veteran on Veterans Day 2021.

The City is regularly cited by NCDA for its exemplary uses of federal housing money and its partnerships to assist low-income persons. By recommendation from HUD, NDCA reached out to Garland to help develop a curriculum for other large municipalities on how to run a successful mortgage program.

Garland’s Budget & Research Department received the Government Finance Officers Association’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its 2021-22 Annual Operating Budget document.

Garland’s Purchasing Department was recently recognized with its 23rd consecutive Excellence of Achievement in Procurement Award from the National Procurement Institute. The award recognizes organizational excellence by measuring innovation, professionalism, e-procurement, productivity and leadership attributes of the profession.

For the 20th consecutive year, Garland’s Nicholson Memorial Library System received the Achievement of Excellence Award from the Texas Municipal Library Directors Association. Only 10% of the public library systems in the state receive the award. To receive the award, libraries must exhibit excellence in 10 service areas, including providing services to underserved populations, offering programming for adults and families, conducting a Summer Reading Program, collaborating with community organizations, supporting workforce development and promoting digital inclusion.

Siddons-Martin Emergency Group and Pierce Manufacturing recently filmed a Customer Spotlight video with the Garland Fire Department. The video features the Pierce 100-foot Aerial Tower at the City’s Fire Training facility.
