[ARCHIVED] Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween

The spookiest time of the year is right around the corner, and the City of Garland wants ghouls and goblins of all ages to celebrate safely. Read these safety reminders before heading out into the night this Halloween.

Trick or Treating

  • When trick or treating, young children should always be accompanied by a parent.
  • Create a map of a safe trick-or-treat route and set a time limit for your children to trick or treat.
  • Cross only at street corners, never between parked cars, and never diagonally across an intersection.
  • Trick or treat while there’s still light outside.
  • Do not go inside anyone’s home. Remain on the porch at all times.
  • Children should not eat any treats until parents have inspected them.
  • Exercise extreme caution when driving a vehicle. Be on the lookout for excited youngsters whose vision might be obscured by masks.

Halloween Fire Safety

  • Use a battery-operated candle or glow stick in jack-o’-lanterns.
  • When choosing costumes, stay away from long, trailing fabric.
  • Teach children to stay away from open flames, including jack-o’-lanterns with candles in them.
  • Dried flowers, cornstalks and crepe paper catch fire easily. Keep all decorations away from open flames and other heat sources, such as light bulbs and heaters.
  • Remember to keep exits clear of decorations so nothing blocks escape routes. Be sure all smoke alarms in the home are working.
