[ARCHIVED] Garland Storm Damage Update - Thursday, Oct. 24

Brush & Bulky pickup underway

The City of Garland is asking residents and visitors NOT to park in front of debris piles on Monday and other collection days, to help brush and bulky crews more efficiently collect those items.

Garland’s brush and bulky crews have picked up more than 600 tons of debris this week in the storm-damage zone. Crews will return Monday and encourage residents to put as much waste on the curb as possible. Crews cannot remove items from private property.

Residents also are reminded to put ONLY recyclable materials in the blue recycle carts. If additional green trash carts are needed, please contact Environmental Waste Services at 972-205-3500 and request temporary use of an additional green cart. Be sure to identify yourself as a resident of the storm-impacted area. You may also make those requests via Garland eAssist

Garland Power & Light has restored power to all tornado-affected customers who can safely accept electric service. Customers without power should check their meter bases to make sure they are not damaged or pulled away from the home. If the meter base is damaged, customers need to have an electrician repair the meter base and have it inspected before power can be restored to the home.

The National Weather Services reports that the tornado that hit portions of southwest Garland Sunday evening was an EF 2 with maximum winds of 135 mph. The City of Garland estimates property damage at almost $20 million.
