As Garland ISD students prepare to return to school Monday, Aug. 12, the City reminds all motorists to observe school zones and stay alert near schools, crosswalks and playgrounds.
Due to the increased pedestrian activity at Hillside Academy, the Garland Transportation Department will open an additional marked pedestrian crosswalk located on Dairy Road between Cascade and Wallace. This new crosswalk will have a crossing guard on school days from 7:15 to 8:15 a.m. and 3 to 4 p.m. Parents are urged to discuss the new pedestrian crosswalk with their children, informing them to obey the crossing guard’s directions and to only cross at this crosswalk location when going to and from school.
Here are a few reminders to keep motorists and pedestrians safe this school year:
- Speed limit is 20 mph.
- Avoid distractions while driving.
- Follow crossing guard's directions.
- Exercise caution at pedestrian crosswalks.
- Talking and texting on cell phones is prohibited.
- Yield right of way to pedestrians.
